Shirley Dukes Memorial Nursing Scholaship Fundraiser
It is hard for us to believe that we’ve recently passed the second anniversary of being without Shirley Dukes. In May 2006 our Director of Nursing tragically passed away following a motor vehicle accident. Her caring, quiet manner paired with her selflessness made her the heart and soul of the practice. She worked equally closely with front desk staff, doctors and nurses, engaging everyone with her quick wit and intelligence to work for the betterment of our patients.
We are reminded of her almost daily. Our medical practice bears her indelible imprint in almost every area, but particularly in the area of personal interaction. Our staff remains close to one another, supportive of each other, kind, caring, and devoted to the children for whom we care. This is no small part because of Shirley's continuing influence.
Some of you may have also known Shirley through her work at AAMC, where she served prior to joining Annapolis Pediatrics. There, too, we frequently hear stories of shared experiences and her tremendous dedication to nursing. Shirley had a valuable gift among pediatric nurses, someone who could put parents and children equally at ease. She also had such an enthusiasm for life and a kindness that she served as an anchor to other staff; bringing teams together toward our common goal of providing the best care possible.
Over the past two years we have called upon friends and family to help us remember Shirley Dukes in the best way we could think of, through a nursing scholarship to be established in her name at Anne Arundel Community College, where she received her nursing diploma. Our ultimate goal is to raise $25,000, which would be enough to provide an annual scholarship to a deserving nursing student.
Annapolis Pediatrics is joining together with Armadillo’s Bar and Grill to host an evening of music and friends on September 6, 2008 from 5 to 8 pm, the day before what would’ve been Shirley’s birthday, to celebrate her and help bring our dream a little closer to reality. We hope that you will post our flyer in your office and encourage your staff to attend. Tickets will be sold at the door for $10, all of which goes directly to the scholarship fund. There will be free hors d’oeuvres, amazing drink specials on premium wines and beer, as well as free music provided by We’re Not Handsome. There will also be a 50/50 raffle held that evening which will benefit the scholarship fund. Tickets can be purchased prior to the event by contacting Jane Howson at Annapolis Pediatrics.
If you are unable to attend this event, but still wish to make a contribution to the scholarship fund, please use the enclosed envelope and send a check payable to Shirley Dukes Scholarship Fund c/o Annapolis Pediatrics, 200 Forbes St, Suite 200, Annapolis, MD 21401. We appreciate donations of any size, and know that even small gifts bring us closer to our goal of creating a lasting memorial to this truly amazing woman.
We here at Annapolis Pediatrics have dedicated ourselves to reaching this goal and ask that you help us in this endeavor.
Thank you so much,
Dwight Fortier, M.D.
